I first heard about the ‘size comparison’ video genre on YouTube from this New York Times article written by a mom whose seven-year-old son became obsessed with them. He’s at the age where kids can finally sort objects by size or quantify with ease, so it’s only logical that videos like these would relieve this itch. As Jenny Marder writes :
According to Dedre Gentner, professor of psychology at Northwestern University, people are exceptionally good at seeing patterns, and they love analogies even at a young age. In fact, she believes that this is the key to our success as a species. Patterns are also essential for a child’s intellectual development and are critical to science and mathematics.
Both sizing videos and sorting tasks show not only objects, but also how objects relate to each other, she said.
“This is part of what I think gives kids the thrill,” said Dr. Gentner. “You get this constant shift from object to relationship model. He gives an idea of the world in a way that is very satisfying. “
