How to Add Lasers and Other AR Effects to the Apple Clips App

You’ve been able to add quirky effects to your Clips videos on iOS for a long time, but iOS 14.5 adds new augmented reality effects to the app that you can use to fill your room with Party City-style lasers, virtual confetti and more. more. You will need an iPhone 12 Pro or iPad Pro with LIDAR (March 2020 or newer) to participate, but throwing a dance party is easy if you’re prepared for the job.

First, make sure you have the Clips app installed on your device. (I’m not very trendy, so I deleted it from my iPhone a while ago.) Second, make sure you are using iOS 14.5. If not, or you are not sure, open the application “Settings” and select “General”> “Software update” to start the update.

Once you’ve upgraded to iOS 14.5 and launched Clips, tap on the colorful star icon in the bottom right corner to start scanning an augmented reality – which sounds a lot weird than it actually is. You simply move your phone around the room to capture everything it sees, including floors, walls, and any objects that might otherwise hinder your dance moves. You will be prompted to confirm when you feel like you’ve scanned enough, which you can always check by moving your phone and watching what it does with the Holodeck-like template you are viewing.

You will then be able to browse through the various filters to see how they look. I myself like the deadmau5 in my room concert.

Unlike my example above, make sure you scan an empty room before you, your friends, or your pets come across it. Otherwise, their bodies will be considered as an object on which the augmented reality system must work. When they are gone, a blob of their size will appear in your video, which will not look very good. (What can I say, the cat ate and did not move.)

Recording is as easy as holding down the red record button if you’re satisfied with your AR effects. However, someone has to keep holding down the button, and it means that you are stuck with using your selfie camera, if you are the only one who can shoot creative video. However, feel free to make whatever mistakes you want; You can easily crop and split the video after it happened. You can also add additional camera-style effects – just not augmented reality effects.
