This week, Portal 2 was 10 years, which gives us a good excuse to return to the timeless (and possibly unmatched) gameplay, based puzzles. But for those who know game levels like the back of their companion cubes, you should check out the recently released free Portal Reloaded mod , which adds a whole new time travel mechanic that you can master. It includes 25 levels “geared towards Portal 2 veterans”, full English voice acting and subtitling support for 11 languages.
We’ve gone through the first few levels of Portal Reloaded, and it could just as well be a full-fledged sequel. The introductory puzzles introduce you to the mechanics of time travel and should lead you back to the puzzle solving that Portal games require if it’s been several years since you last played.
You will receive the Legendary Portal Cannon shortly after joining. There are a few more pre-determined time warp puzzles to solve in the levels, and then your portal cannon will unlock the ability to shoot green portals that allow you to switch between game time periods as you see fit. Since then, puzzles have been nullifying everything.
As the unnamed AI companion Portal Reloaded previously explained, adding time to this combination “makes you think in four dimensions” and ponders “not only where to place the portals, but when.” The extra dimension also has its own rules. Some of them are obvious – moving an object in the present affects its location in the future – while others require more getting used to, such as how objects can be transferred from the future to the present, but not vice versa. These new rules add an extra layer of difficulty that will likely challenge even the most seasoned Portal 2 players.
I stepped back from my brief hands-on experience with Portal Reloaded feeling excited to play some more. The new time travel mechanics, puzzle design, and total production cost of the mod are almost as good as Valve, but definitely made for Portal experts.
