How to Filter Spotify Playlists by Genre or Mood

Chances are, your Liked Songs playlist on Spotify is a jumble of genres and artists that don’t quite match. Personally, I don’t have to listen to songs from Gorguts, Megan Thee Stallion, and the Spirited Away soundtrack in a row . No DJ in their right mind would program a mix like this – and it confuses your shared Spotify playlists a bit.

Fortunately, Spotify adds a new way to filter your playlist of songs you like using genre and mood tags, which means you can temporarily narrow your collection down to songs that fit the ambience you want.

You will only see genre and mood filters in your Liked Songs playlist, but organizing on demand is certainly faster than creating a new playlist. More importantly, it makes listening to your favorite collection of songs a lot less frustrating.

The feature is launching for both free and premium Spotify users on Android and iOS in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It will roll out gradually over the coming weeks, so you might have to wait a little longer before you see an option available. Also, it is currently only available in English.

Before you can use the filters, you need to like at least 30 songs on Spotify – just tap the heart icon while you listen to the music you dig if you need to boost your scores. When you have enough songs you like, Spotify will automatically generate up to 15 personalized tags based on the tracks in the list. Here’s how to enable them:

  1. Open Spotify and select the “Your Library” tab.
  2. Scroll down and open the Liked Songs playlist.
  3. At the top of the playlist screen, there will be a list of tags. Click one to filter your collection down to songs of that genre or mood.
  4. If you want to change the filters (or turn them off entirely), press the X to turn off the currently selected filter and see the full list of songs you like, then select a new tag from the list at the top of the page.
