How to Fix Recent Twitter Dark Mode Changes

Many Twitter accounts found that their display settings changed suddenly today without warning.

For some – myself included – the app has switched from Dim mode to an all-black Light Mute theme, while others now see Light mode by default, rather than any dark mode. Some users were unable to return the dark theme in their Twitter screen settings if their OS was set to light mode.

The good news is, if you are unhappy with the new look of Twitter, there is a simple explanation and an even simpler solution.

Twitter recently changed its website and mobile app to automatically match your device’s theme settings, and “Lights Out” is now the default dark theme for the app. Therefore, if your computer or smartphone has Dark Mode permanently enabled, Twitter now displays with the Light Mute theme, unless you manually change it to Dim.

For the same reason, Twitter in some cases switched to light mode instead of dark – the application simply reacts to device settings at the system level. However, Twitter told The Verge that the forced lighting mode was an unintentional mistake. The bug has now reportedly been fixed, so users can switch back to Dim or Lights Out in the app settings without changing their device’s OS theme.
