How to Watch HBO Max on Roku

HBO Max is a pretty enjoyable streaming service that combines shows and movies from HBO, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Turner Classic Movies with a host of other Warner Bros. content. in one application. Unfortunately, it is still not available everywhere – at least on Roku. The streamer announced today that it will finally be available on Amazon tablets and Fire devices , but Roku owners are still out of luck. However, if you’re tied to your Roku but willing to tinker with other devices, you can connect the HBO Max to your TV in other ways.

First, check to see if the HBO Max app is available on other devices connected to the TV, including the TV itself. Otherwise, most people probably have access to an Android, iOS, Windows, or Mac device. They all support HBO Max to some degree, and there are tons of ways to connect your computer or smartphone to your Roku or TV.

Most Roku products support mirroring from Android and Windows devices , and some support Apple’s AirPlay 2 if upgraded to Roku OS 9.4 or higher :

  • Roku TV: A xxxx , C xxxx , C xx GB, 7 xxxx
  • Roku Streambar: 9102
  • Roku Smart Soundbar: 9101, 9100
  • Roku Ultra: 4800, 4670, 4661, 4662, 4660, 4640
  • Roku Premiere: 4630, 4620, 3920
  • Roku Streaming Haircut: 3811, 3810

Both of these methods require your streaming device and your Roku to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. (And of course, you’ll need an iOS / iPadOS device running 12.3 or newer, or a macOS laptop running Mojave or newer.) If your Roku doesn’t support screen mirroring, you can also try casting to another device or directly to TV.

Finally, if none of your devices support Mirroring or Airplay, try connecting your computer or smartphone to your TV via HDMI and watch in that mode. Sure, this creates a cumbersome living room setup, but many Windows and Mac computers have an HDMI output port (or the ability to plug it in via a dongle like this one that converts Thunderbolt to HDMI). Grab a cheap but decent HDMI cable (or whatever cable or adapter you need for your smartphone) and you’re good to go. It’s not a neat way to show HBO Max on your TV, but it works.
