Are You Going to Crave This Strong Caramel Grape?

One of my favorite fall traditions is arguing about caramel apples with my New England boyfriend. He – the man who is wrong – thinks that the Connecticut origin gives him a special understanding of what “falling is like” . He insists that sweet apples – silly and difficult to eat – are better.

However, he jokes about him, because he does not know how to make candy, and I refuse to do anything other than caramel; Thus, this house remains a home of caramel apples. Recently, however, I’ve been thinking about expanding to make room in my home (mouth and heart) for vodka-soaked and caramelized green grapes. They are sweet, they are tart, covered in peanuts. I love them.

And, yes, it may seem like I gave out the ending of this video, but many questions remain: is the vodka leaking? Do all forms of caramel work? Should you wash the grapes first? These are just a few of the mysteries that will be answered.

I think this recipe was designed to serve as a party snack, but we don’t have that many parties these days. Fortunately, it works equally well as a sit-on-the-couch snack, a Monday night snack, or a hide under a bridge snack. You don’t even have to wait for the caramel to solidify. Simply pierce the grapes with a toothpick, dip them in the caramel, crush them into a pile of chopped peanuts, and pop them into your mouth. I won’t call it “elegant,” but it’s simple, delicious, and not covered in too hard, too sweet candy shells.
