You Will Want to Cook This Spicy Cranberry Mustard All Year Round

I’ve always thought cranberry sauce was more important than Thanksgiving . While it plays an important role on turkey day – it prevents salt, fat and sage from becoming oversaturated – the sweet, pungent seasoning can be used to balance rich and savory foods throughout the year. It cleans up the taste especially well when combined with pure mustard powder.

As we learned earlier , the easiest way to make super hot mustard is to mix the dried mustard powder with a little water and wait 10 minutes. That’s it – the moisture activates the enzymes in the seeds and allows them to release the caustic compounds that cause pain. You can leave the mustard as is, or mix it with something sweet to create a seasoning that makes the perfect addition to salted meats.

“Anything sweet” is up to you. You can use honey. Maple syrup can be used. Or you can dive into the holiday season and eat some cranberry sauce. Yes, spicy cranberry mustard will be an essential part of your sandwich, but it will also be used in ham and cheese, in a soft pretzel, or as an accessory for a hot cheese plate. It’s a torturous and delicious blend of sweet, tangy, and sinus-smoothing, and it’s easy to make. Hot cranberry mustard is hottest when fresh, so cook a little to keep it as hot as possible.

Spicy and sweet cranberry mustard

Ingredients:

  • 1 part mustard powder (I like S&B )
  • 1 part water
  • 3 parts cranberry sauce (jelly makes the mustard smooth, but whole berries can provide a nice contrast)

Instructions:

Combine water and mustard powder in a small bowl and stir until a paste forms. Cover and set aside for 10 minutes, let the sharp joints wake up. Add the cranberry sauce, stir and mash with a fork to form a smooth mustard. (Stir as mustard gas is painful!) Try and add more cranberries (or some honey or maple) if needed. … Brush on turkey sandwiches, ham sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, or any other greasy, salty filling sandwich.
