Register Your Child’s Domain Name When They Are Young
It is impossible to know who your child will grow up to be when he or she is young. But chances are good that whatever talents, skills, or interests they pursue in the future, they will need a personalized website to support or promote something . They may want an online portfolio of their graphic work, their amateur films, or their top-selling novels. They might want to ditch LinkedIn in favor of their own online resume. But if their name is Sam Brewer and sambrewer.com is already taken, they will be thrilled.
(I came up with this name, but then I got curious, I started looking, and it was removed , so it’s too late if you were expecting it.)
That’s why, at a time when it seems like parents have so little control over our children’s future, I suggest you do one tiny thing to ensure a brighter tomorrow – at least when it comes to satisfying domain names. Register them at firstnamelastname.com and submit login information when they are old enough to promote themselves or their work.
I personally did it for myself, my husband and our son. We use GoDaddy , but there are some good registrars out there , and you can search for available domain names on any registrar website. Domain registration costs around $ 15 a year, which is cheap enough for you to register multiple options if you’re not sure if your child will go for Charles or Charlie when they get older. (Again, there is a curiosity: samuelbrewer.com too busy .)
Of course, the .com domain suffix isn’t your only option. If your child’s name is already registered or if you want to leave it to chance, there are other domain suffixes. But .com is one of the most popular and therefore the most memorable.
It would also be a great gift to give to a niece, nephew, or family friend if their parents can’t afford the annual fee – or they just haven’t thought about it.
