Frozen Turkey Waffles in Waffles for Thanksgiving Sliders

I’m not a huge consumer of turkey sandwiches, but Thanksgiving sandwich is a different story altogether. The moment you add the cranberry sauce , I’m ready for it. Whether we are dealing with cold cuts, roasted turkey, or turkey burgers, I will happily eat a sandwich if it fits the theme.

On a recent trip to the grocery store, I grabbed a bag of frozen turkey meatballs, not knowing exactly what I was going to do with them (they cost $ 5!). Then, yesterday afternoon, I was pulling my immersion circulator out of the appliance cabinet when it hit me. My waffle maker was sitting there, begging to participate in the Thanksgiving conversation. “I wonder if I can break those meatballs into little sliders?” I asked the instrument. He said he thought it was worth a try.

My waffle iron (whose imaginary personality and voice is just an extension of my own personality) was correct. I was actually able to break the frozen turkey meatballs into small juicy patties with a great crust and they were pretty darn good with a little cranberry sauce (covered on a Hawaiian roll, natch).

Frozen meatballs take a little coaxing – after all, they are solid frozen balls of meat, so they are not as easy to wring as some of our other suggestions in this category. You have to gently waffle these guys, rotating them every couple of minutes until they are soft and flat (this takes about 10 minutes). Do not force close the waffle iron; give it time for the warmth to do its job.

When you’ve got a hot and juicy turkey tortilla, place it on a roll topped with a little mayonnaise, mustard, and a spoonful of cranberry sauce, and add some brie.

Thanksgiving Waffle Sliders

Ingredients:

  • Fully frozen turkey cutlets
  • Rolls (I like King’s Hawaiian)
  • Mayo
  • Mustard
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Bree

Instructions:

Heat the waffle iron over medium heat and let it heat up. Place a couple of meatballs in a waffle iron and cover with the top plate resting on the balls. Let them heat up for two minutes, press lightly on the top plate and let the meatballs cook for another minute. Once you see the crust begin to develop and darken, rotate the meatballs 90 degrees and repeat. Continue this little song and dance until the balls are flat and form a nice golden brown crust on the outside.

Toast the rolls if desired, then brush the bottom half with a little mayonnaise and yellow mustard, place the turkey cutlet on top of the bottom half, spoon the cranberry sauce over the pie, and cover the brie slice and top half of the roll. Drink and repeat until you run out of meatballs (or cranberry sauce).
