Check Your Spices to See If They Are Helping to Get Rid of Salmonella

Remember when we learned about food safety at school and were told not to put raw chicken right on the table or eat raw cookie dough and that’s basically all? Well, as you probably already know, this list is much, much longer, and now includes foods you never knew existed, like onions .

Dried herbs and spices from two different companies – both due to salmonella – have been the most recent unexpected casualties of food recalls. Here’s how to find out if the list contains those in your shelf or closet at home.

Sauer Brands

More than two dozen spices from The Spice Hunter are part of a voluntary recall by Sauer Brands, Inc. due to concerns about salmonella. Technically only salmonella was found in parsley, but they recall other spices produced at the same time due to the abundance.

What and where

Spices in question include organic cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, sesame seeds, pepper, Chinese ginger, and a few others that are listed on the FDA declaration along with batch codes for the products. They have been sold online and in stories in Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New -Jersey. Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

What to do

If you purchased FDA-Listed Spice Hunter products , do not use them and return them to where you bought them for a full refund. If you have any questions, you can contact Sauer Brands, Inc. call 1-800-444-3061, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Red Monkey Food

Essentially the same situation with Red Monkey Foods : the problem is with parsley (salmonella again), but they are voluntarily recalling some of their products. In fact, these are all varieties of parsley or Herbes De Provence, and you can find batch numbers and other information in the FDA ad .

What and where

Red Monkey Spices were sold under the Great Value brand at Walmart, under their own brand on the Cost Plus World Market, and several others. They have been sold in all 50 states and in Puerto Rico.

What to do

If you purchased a product with the stated expiration dates , do not use them. Either throw them away or return them to the store for full compensation.
