Cling to the Feeling of Summer With the Bush

One of the most pathetic and painfully nostalgic songs ever written is “That Summer Feeling ” by Jonathan Richman. It’s not really a summer song; it’s about experiencing summer joys as a carefree young man who hasn’t really experienced anything else. It was quite difficult to listen to this summer because there has been a lot to take care of over the past few months.

The only moments that seemed remotely close to carefree or summer were the times when I was walking outside the house, sitting by the river, or picking some kind of fruit from a tree or blackberry. Most of this happened before a group of trees caught fire and the air became too dangerous to breathe, although I was recently able to harvest blackberries behind my father’s house after it rained and dispersed the smoke. I chose a lot of blackberries as usual.

In my opinion, the best use of the last bite of too many blackberries (after the best ones have been eaten and the shoemakers have baked) is to soak the remaining soft, not quite perfect berries in sugar, and then mix the resulting syrup with vinegar to it turned out to be a bush . The shrubs combine three of my favorites: sugar, acid, and the self-righteous feeling that accompanies eating all the berries before mold grows on them. (Although, if you don’t want to make it yourself, you can buy it.) The bushes are good to spray with soda water, but even better if mixed with soda water and gin . The result is an aggressively aromatic sprit that imparts a sweet and tart berry aroma to you, even as the gin hits you in the brain, creating something similar – if not quite the same – to the sensation of summer. My favorite is berry bushes, but feel free to experiment with the formula. To make a carbonated drink, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounce gin
  • 1 1/2 ounce shrub ( homemade or store bought)
  • 3 ounces sparkling water

Pour the first two ingredients into a highball and stir. Fill a glass with ice, cover with soda water, and stir again gently before sipping through a straw.
