How to Fix the Latest Sleep Error in Windows 10

Windows 10 September 2020 Update finally fixes excessive disk optimization behavior that puts SSDs at risk . Unfortunately, this also leads to another annoying error that disables hibernation for some users.

If your computer wakes up suddenly from hibernation, or doesn’t even go into hibernation, you may have a bug. Stories like this have cropped up in support streams and bug reports since the September 2020 update rollout, including reports of laptops staying turned on despite being closed.

If this sounds familiar, a similar error occurred in the May 2020 update. Luckily, the same workaround works here that fixed the bug in May.

How to fix hibernation error in Windows 10

It looks like hibernation stops working when there is an optional system update waiting to be installed, or if Windows tries to install updates automatically at night. To resolve this issue, open the Windows Settings menu and choose Update & Security> Windows Update. Download any updates.

After the download is complete, or if the update file has already been downloaded, you need to restart your computer to apply the updates.

The installation and reboot may take a while, but this is the most important step. Hibernation should return to normal after you restart your device, so restart it immediately if you can.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, here’s a slightly more advanced method that might work:

  1. Find “Services.msc” in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click the Services application in the search results to start it.
  3. Scroll down and click Windows Update to highlight it in the list.
  4. Click Stop.
  5. Click Start.
  6. Select Restart.
  7. Close the Services application window, then open Windows 10 Settings.
  8. Go to Update & Security> Windows Update.
  9. Click Check for Updates.
  10. Install all updates and restart your computer.

Even with potential sleep issues, it’s worth installing the September 2020 update as it fixes the automatic defragmentation bug we talked about a few weeks ago . Windows 10 defragmented external hard drives every time you plugged them in or turned on the computer, which puts unnecessary strain on solid state drives and can lead to wear and tear. After installing the September 2020 update, you can (hopefully) reverse the workarounds mentioned in our post and go back to using the SSD without risking its longevity.
