Get Your Free Copy of Serious Sam: First Encounter by Wednesday

You can always seem to find a new free game. And while you may not be overly investing in the wacky 2001 first-person shooter – Serious Sam: The First Encounter – I’m not going to rob you of your nostalgic peak, especially when there’s nothing else to do during a pandemic. and it’s a great way to spend the day for free.

But let’s be clear: the first game in the Serious Sam franchise is old and the graphics aren’t impressive, but it’s still a pretty wild ride that causes the silliness and chaos of Duke Nukem 3D without any strippers or piss. I mean, at some point – very soon in the game, I must point out – you find yourself shooting decapitated people with bombs instead of hands. And from that moment on, things get even stranger.

When I first played this game many, many years ago, I remember thinking, “I would like to know how they developed this game.” I mean, you just go to the office, load up on sugar and write whatever comes to your mind on a board with “ideas for developers”? You throw a dart at the wall, and whatever strange topics you bring up, is that what you throw into your game? Does anyone come up with these ideas as they progress, allowing them to become more and more absurd as the timeline approaches?

What I love the most about Serious Sam: The First Encounter, besides the nonsense, is that the levels of the game feel so stretched . They are not very difficult, they are just big . You will learn to love circling in the air, running around the huge courtyard, shooting at everything that tries to follow you and blowing you up. If I remember correctly, the final boss of the game is literally a giant four-armed beast … the thing … that you fight in front of a giant pyramid – as if Goro from the Mortal Kombat franchise needed a little extra money to keep up his growing steroid addiction.

This is my pitch. Serious Sam: The First Encounter won’t blow you graphically, but it’s a great little time killer, especially if you find yourself burdened with an older system because everyone else in your house is using newer desktops or laptops. Or, hey, if we’re all going to be using planes again, throw them on your laptop and see if you can survive before your flight lands.

Your possibilities are endless, but your ability to download the game is not. The free version of Serious Sam: The First Encounter will release Wednesday, August 26th at 6:00 AM PT. Add it to your GOG account and you can download it and play it whenever you want.
