How to Create a Private Learning Area for Your Kids
Many parents are trying to figure out how to create a learning space for their children at home, and there are several complicating factors to consider. If you work from home, they should be close enough to you that you do not walk around the house every time they have questions or difficulties; but they cannot be so close that every phone or video call distracts everyone else. And if you’re setting up workspaces for multiple kids, that further limits your options.
But one mom may have come up with a simple solution that gives each child their own small, semi-personal workspace, even if they share a room with others – with a triple-fold foam presentation board.
Angelina Harper posted her simple, affordable solution to Facebook last week, spending a lot of time discussing whether to buy each of her three kids a separate virtual learning table:
I thought about remodeling (again) our basement. I constantly thought that 1) I would work from home, 2) my husband works from home, and 3) THREE children in NTI [non-traditional education]. We have enough basement space BUT they would have to move if Mom or Dad met, which would be too much.
Harper has equipped each space with a small desk lamp, pencil holder, calendar and hanging folder for work or assignments, as well as some nice motivational messages. She told me that she preferred a triple-folded foam board ( like this one ) over a regular poster board because of its strength. Imagine a science fair meets homeschooling during a global pandemic.
Some kids may not like the feeling of working in a mini-cubicle, but for those who tend to be distracted or prefer a little privacy while working, this is one possible solution to the problem of finding a job for everyone in the house. call them your own.
