What Awaits HBO Max in August 2020
One of the most frustrating things about the entertaining but highly annoying 2018 film Green Book is the arbitrary use of a very good title. Victor Hugo Green ‘s Green Book of Black Motorists , published from the 1930s to the 1960s, is a fascinating piece of history: an atlas / travel guide designed to help black motorists navigate the dangerous roads of Jim Crow era America. telling them where they could eat and sleep without fear (or less fear) of denial of service, escape from the city, or worse. The Green Book, Unexplained Best Photography, used the title post as a minor (who needs a guide when you have a friendly, slightly racist Viggo Mortensen to keep you safe?), But it makes up a much more fun part of the book. the new supernatural horror series, Lovecraft Country , which will premiere this month on all HBO broadcast and streaming services. Executive producer Jordan Peele, developed for television by Misha Green and based on the novel by Matt Ruff, the series follows a man named Atticus Black who travels through the American South in the 1950s in search of his missing father. Along the way, he encounters anticipated hatred and prejudice alongside ghostly horrors straight from HP Lovecraft (speaking of racism), a Negro motorist’s Green Book helping to keep him from at least literal horror. The first of 10 episodes will be released on August 16.
Meanwhile, HBO Max is adding a ton of recent theatrical releases (including Oscar-winning JoJo Rabbit, Queen & Slim, Birds of Prey, and The Way Back ). And while it loses one major franchise – abandoning all eight Harry Potter films just three months after being advertised at launch – at least it is bringing back most of the Batman films, including the aforementioned 2020 box office grosses of Birds of Prey and Fantastic Liberation. One Harley Quinn, which goes against the trend of recent DC films, is actually fun to watch.
