You Can Make a Bacardi Cocktail Without Bacardi

Daiquiri is the most common rum cocktail, and for good reason. It’s delicious, refreshing, and very easy to prepare. It doesn’t need any changes, but – if you feel the need to replace it – you can make a completely new (all pink) drink by swapping out the plain syrup for grenadine.

This “weird trick” turns your daiquiri into a Bacardi cocktail, a once popular drink that for some reason doesn’t appear on many menus. I think any good white rum will do, although Bacardi might disagree . I used the 3 year old Havana Club AƱejo and loved it because this rum is really damn good. The Bacardi shake follows this classic sour format and is tart and sweet like a daiquiri. It’s also fruity (and pinker) thanks to the grenadine. I used store-bought grenadine, but you can make it yourself by making a syrup with equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar. (Just make a simple syrup, but use juice instead of water.) This extra step really makes the drink a lot tastier, and I think it’s a nice little project.

To make this vibrant, refreshing rum-based libation, you’ll need:

  • 2 ounces of white rum
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice
  • 3/4 ounce grenadine

Pour everything into a cocktail shaker full of ice and shake until it’s too cold to handle. Strain into your compartment glass, garnish with lime if you like, and take a moment to admire the beauty of your drink before drinking.
