Always Back up Your Data Before Leaving Work
Before you apply to lay off your boss, it’s important to take care of data management first. In the video above, I show you the steps to take to back up your data and remove any personal information from your work devices.
Backing up work files
You don’t know how quickly IT can revoke access to your computer, so it’s important to copy all your work files to an external hard drive or cloud service. Just make sure that any files you take are your work and do not contain any sensitive information. You don’t want to end up on the other end of a lawsuit because you are accused of stealing the company’s confidential intellectual property.
Save your emails, contacts and browser information
If your business uses G Suite, Google makes it easy to collect and download all of your data. However, if your business is not using G Suite, I recommend this detailed guide on how to download and save data such as emails and contacts.
Delete any personal information
Once your data is securely backed up, it’s time to start cleaning up your work devices. Go through your work computer or work phone and sign out of any personal accounts, delete non-work-related files, and uninstall additional applications. Be careful to only erase your personal information and do not completely erase the device.
