How to Try Out the Great Chrome 86 Battery Saver Solution Today

Google Chrome’s incredible ability to overload your system may soon be a thing of the past. The most recent build of Chrome Canary includes big changes to the way that background websites handle Chrome, which can reduce the load on Chrome in terms of your device’s battery life. We hope these changes will be made to the stable release as part of the Chrome 86 update for Windows, Mac, Android, Linux, and Chrome OS.

A web development team looked at the excessive number of Javascript timer triggers in Chrome and found that letting them just fire as many times as they want doesn’t make the browser better to use. While some of these Javascript timers keep track of important processes – for example, whether you’ve received new posts or notifications on a social media page – others check for unnecessary information, such as interactions with ads, or whether you’ve scrolled further down the page. … Many of these extra timers take up additional memory and, as a result, increase battery life.

Google is putting in place limits that limit these timers to refresh once a minute, which should reduce system and battery usage without affecting website performance. How many? In testing, Google increased the laptop’s battery capacity by two hours (36 random tabs open; Javascript timer is limited to one every minute).

How to enable Chrome battery saver settings in Chrome Canary

Like other beta and early access software, Chrome Canary is unfinished and potentially unstable. There is always a chance to run into bugs or compatibility bugs, but this is the only way to try out potential power saving changes in Chrome (for now). If something goes wrong, just go back to your regular old Chrome.

Also, the steps to enable the experimental flag only apply to Chrome Canary. After the public release of Chrome 86, this will most likely be the new default browser behavior. so you probably don’t need to include anything.

  1. Download and install Chrome Canary . It installs as a standalone app and does not overwrite the stable Chrome app.
  2. Open a tab in Chrome Canary and go to chrome: // flags
  3. Search for “Hold Javascript Timers in the Background”.
  4. Use the drop-down menu to select the Activate Immediately When Tab is Hidden checkbox .
  5. Click Restart to close and restart Chrome Canary. The setting will be applied after restart.
