How to See 3D Dinosaurs at Home

Remember when we told you that you can view 3D animals at home using Google and your smartphone? Well, now you can do the same with your favorite Jurassic dinosaurs like the Velociraptor that visited my sunny porch today.

The instructions from Google are pretty simple:

Search for the dinosaur on Google using your mobile device and tap View in 3D to rotate or zoom in and see it up close. You can then move the dinosaur into your space using AR and adjust its size to see how big it is compared to the things around you. On Android devices, turn up the volume to hear the dull footsteps and roar of every dinosaur.

Here are 10 dinosaurs you can see in 3D:

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Velociraptor
  • Triceratops
  • Spinosaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Brachiosaurus
  • Ankylosaurus
  • Dilophosaurus
  • Pteranodon
  • Parasaurolophus

As with AR animals , this is not perfect science, and there are more features on an Android phone than on my iPhone. I found it worked better indoors, and even then, the spinosaurus sometimes swam in my hallway instead of stomping around. However, my son and I had some fun photographing him stroking an ankylosaurus.

And if you want to get totally carried away, watch this video on how the AR Brachiosaurus was created.
