How to Connect Your Favorite Streaming Services to Google Maps

Using your phone while driving is not only dangerous but also prohibited by law. However, most of us rely on our smartphones to get directions or listen to music and podcasts in our car. Thankfully, Google Maps has plenty of hands-free navigation as well as useful shortcuts and voice integration for several music streaming services – on Android at least.

How to add music control shortcuts to Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps on your Android device.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the upper right corner to open the menu.
  3. Go to Settings> Navigation Settings.
  4. Scroll down and turn on Show media playback controls.
  5. Select the default app. Google Maps currently supports Google Play Music, YouTube Music, and Spotify, but apps must be installed on your device for them to appear on this list.
  6. Click Next, then OK.
  7. You can change the default media application at any time by clicking “Default media application” in the navigation settings and choosing the application you want to use.
  8. Exit the menu and return to the main Google Maps screen. Manual media controls will now show up in Google Maps for the application you selected.

If you’re using iOS , you’ll find a similar option under Settings> Navigation> Music Playback Controls , but you’ll only be able to select Apple Music or Spotify.

Turn on voice control for media playback

You can also set up a specific Google Assistant app to be used in Google Maps so that you can play and control music hands-free (this will require Google Assistant to be set up on your device).

  1. Go back to Settings> Navigation Settings .
  2. Make sure the “Ok Google” definition is turned on.
  3. Scroll down and click on “Default Media Provider Assistant”.
  4. Select the app you want to use from the list provided. The list will show only supported multimedia applications that are already installed on your device.
  5. Press the Back button to return to the Google Maps navigation settings, then close the menu. You can now ask Google Assistant to play music using the app you have selected in Google Maps.
