These Are the Only Shoes Your Child Will Need This Summer

Any plans for the summer? Or will your summer be like the end of winter and all spring this year, except that it’s more outside than indoors? Most of us won’t go out in public that often, let alone some unusual place. In fact, the only shoes your kids will need this summer are water shoes.

That was the conclusion that Lifehacker editor-in-chief Joel Cunningham recently came to after his three-year-old son spent most of his free time wandering through muddy puddles in his sneakers, effectively ruining them. However, instead of replacing them with newer, more shiny sneakers, Joel immediately bought a pair of hard-soled water shoes.

These are the only shoes his son and your young children will need this summer, and here’s why:

They are versatile

Does little Billy want to run through the sprinkler, and then ride the scooter, then splash in the puddles, then play the mark, and then run through the sprinkler again? He can wear his water shoes for just about any outdoor activity he can dream of. And since he will want to perform an action for several minutes at a time, there is no need to switch from water shoes to sandals to sneakers.

They are practically indestructible

Children will grow out of their water shoes before destroying them. These items are designed to get wet and dirty. Go ahead and make it a summer challenge – who can be so active outdoors to rip these damn things apart? (If they really succeed, it means that they were really active, and we will consider this a victory.)

They are comfortable

Water shoes fit like gloves, with the exception of the feet. The tough outsole protects their feet from the tarmac, while the elastic upper moves with them and breathes. No awkward rubbing and no annoying piece of plastic between your toes like flip flops.

Of course, water shoes won’t win any fashion competitions, but we’re not aiming for style right now; we go for the function. Save the cute sandals and the coveted backlit sneakers for a year, when we can all be close to each other again. For now, water shoes are all they need.
