How to Change Skin Tone When Reacting to Zoom

Nobody likes to look like Homer Simpson. At least that’s how I feel when I send an emoji to a friend on my smartphone and forget to change my skin tone. If you like yellow, that’s great; I think it looks a little weird in a text message.

And while everyone knows the trick with displaying different skin tones on Android or iOS – press and hold your finger on any suitable emoji to highlight all the different skin tones that you can use – you may not know that other apps like Zoom also let you choose the skin tone for your reaction. It’s not going to fundamentally change your Zoom experience, but it does at least allow you to express yourself (through reactions) in a way that makes you feel more like you.

If you are using Windows or Mac, you need to launch the Zoom app and click on your profile picture in the upper right corner. From there click on Settings and you should see an option to set a skin tone for your reaction right on the General page. You cannot miss it:

As a reminder, reactions can be found in the lower right corner of the Zoom window during a regular meeting. You have two powerful options to choose from: applause and thumbs up. Your smartphone is not.

When you choose a reaction, it will appear on the live video of your face for about five seconds and then disappear. No one in the meeting will receive any specific notice of your reaction as it means a short “I like this” or “you are doing great” that you can share while someone is speaking or speaking. I wouldn’t mind if Zoom added this emoji in a future update: ?
