How to Make Sour Pickled Cherries

Earlier this week I made a jar of pickled cherries and loved them. They are good on cheese platters and good in salads, but they are absolutely excellent in a compartment full of alcohol. The easiest step is to spank one in Manhattan. An expert move is to break them into gin.

While technically not “sour” due to the lack of citrus, it tastes definitely sour (due to the vinegar), so I’ll call it sour. Does this cocktail recipe require you to prepare something other than a cocktail? Yes. But pickled cherries are very easy to make and good to have at home. In this case, the sweet and tart pickle pairs beautifully with gin to create a refreshing, savory cocktail that sounds sour. To make it you will need:

  • 5 pickled cherries and a half ounce of pickle (recipe here )
  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup

Add cherries to a shaker and sink into oblivion. Add the remaining ingredients and fill the shaker with ice, then shake until the shaker is too cold to hold comfortably. Strain through a fine mesh strainer and garnish with another pickled cherry.
