Nintendo Switch Users Should Get This Soothing Free Animal Tetris Theme This Weekend

Overall, over the past few months, my Switch has been used to play exactly three things: Mario Kart, Tetris, and Animal Crossing. This weekend, these last two team up in the Animal Crossing Maximus Cup in Tetris 99. If you “win” the competition, you will win the Animal Crossing theme on the Tetris app forever, and I’m here to tell you that it really is. you want even if you don’t play Animal Crossing.

Tetris 99 is free to download with a Nintendo Online subscription , so if you’ve played Animal Crossing online, you can download Tetris 99 for free. Do it.

The Animal Crossing theme is essentially a skin on top of an existing game, complete with Animal Crossing sound effects and relaxing background music from the game. It’s only available this weekend, unless you win it forever. I played it a little yesterday and almost felt my blood pressure drop with every game. The combination of Tetris and Animal Crossing jams is pretty good, at least for me.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Tetris 99 is a fighting style in which you essentially play Tetris against 98 other people to try to reach Tetris Maximus. Depending on how good you are and how good the people you are playing against, games usually last anywhere from a few seconds to two or three minutes.

I personally think this is a good break between tasks during a pandemic. When I’m upset about what I’m working on, I take a few minutes off to play a game. Since the games are so short, this is an option that allows me to play and switch off for a short time without getting carried away with something more time consuming (like working on my island).

The Maximus Cup is not so much a competition with others as it is a personal competition to collect 100 points over the weekend.

You get points for every game you play. If you manage to come first in a Tetris match, you will receive 100 points immediately. Second place gets 50 points in the competition, and third gets 30. After that, it slowly decreases in groups of 10 or 20, until you get to 99th place, which gives 1 point. I consider myself “good” in Tetris and it took me about 7 games to get to 100. This is cumulative so you can technically hit the bottom 100 times, although I think even the worst players should be able to do better.

Once you get to 100, you will permanently unlock the Animal Crossing theme in the game so you can use it again in the future. I’m pretty sure this will be my default for a while for now. You are also playing with the theme in a tournament, so if you try and hate it, you can interrupt the game without wasting time getting 100 points.

Nintendo has hosted several similar tournaments in the past in which you can win a new theme. My favorite before was Ring Fit, which provides a rather upbeat soundtrack to the game. At a time when many of us are a little nervous; however, you really can’t beat these relaxing Nook ringtones. If you have a Nintendo online subscription, you should try it this weekend.
