Add Some Maw to Your Melissa Kirsch Vespers

It’s a bummer here at Lifehacker tonight because we’re saying goodbye to Melissa Kirsch . Melissa has been our editor-in-chief and fearless leader ever since I came in as a full-time employee, and it’s hard for me to imagine a site without her at this time.

There is more to being a good editor than catching typos and appropriating stories; it’s about caring for your writers, giving them space to grow, and taking their voices out of them, instilling confidence in them (and catching their typos). Melissa succeeded in this, and Lifehacker benefited from it.

Because Melissa loves pastis – a star anise liqueur that gets cloudy when diluted due to terpenes! – I decided to make a very pastis-forward (so Melissa will like it), but a very tough cocktail, similar to Vesper (to drink the sadness). I replaced the usual Cochhi or Lillet mouth and I think it works really well. I also stirred it because it is physically difficult for me to shake the alcoholic beverage. To make it you will need:

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1/2 ounce vodka
  • 1/4 pastis

Add everything to a mixing glass filled with cracked ice, stir for at least a minute, until the glass is very cold. Strain in a compartment, add a little lemon peel oil on top and fry with Melissa.
