How to Meet a Flock of Adorable Eels

Sumida Aquarium in Japan invites people to a short teleconference with their garden eel aquarium . This is not a live broadcast; it’s a two-way challenge, and they specifically want the blackheads to see your face.

The aquarium writes that eels are usually very shy and hide in the sand, but in their aquarium they are used to seeing visitors passing by. Now that the aquarium is closed to visitors, the eels are starting to feel shy again. So shy that they don’t allow the caretakers to look good enough to take proper care of them.

What is garden eel? Well, they are adorable. They live in burrows and stick their heads out while feeding. This is how they look :

If you want Facetime of these eels (and, yes, you’ll need the Facetime iOS app), Aquarium asks you to do so on May 3-5, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Tokyo time. Due to the time zone difference, those of us in the US will watch it in the evening. So this is May 2-4, from 9 am to 1 am ET, or 6 pm to 10 pm Pacific Time.

The caretakers set up five screens around the eel tank, so you can call any of these five accounts:

  • helpchin001@gmail.com‌
  • helpchin002@gmail.com‌
  • helpchin003@gmail.com‌
  • helpchin004@gmail.com‌
  • helpchin005@gmail.com‌

The aquarium asks you to show your face and can talk and wave, but please don’t yell at the eels. And after five minutes Facetimed, hang up and let someone reach out.
