How Did You Enjoy Your Dance Party Workout This Week?

Have you joined our challenge and participated in one of Ryan Heffington’s dance parties this week? If not, here’s what you missed (and what we’ll do next).

Heffington is a choreographer and stage director. He shot Sia’s music video “Chandelier” to name one famous example, and if you want to dance to that , you can see him break up the moves inthis video . Anyway, while his dance studio is closed, he trains at a dance party on Instagram Live. Find it on Insta at @ ryan.heffington .

This week had live training sessions on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he repeats the schedule next week. Each live video is 24 hours long, so today I was able to film yesterday’s workout.

First, Heffington walks us through a slow yoga-style workout. (I made the mistake of choosing my garage as my dancing spot, so I had to run and grab a yoga mat to keep my hands out of the cold, muddy ground. Consider yourself forewarned.) After that, the dancing begins.

Unlike many dance workout videos I’ve seen, this one is informal, with enough structure to help you feel like you are doing something with other people. When Heffington calls a vine or a square, you know what to do (he explains these moves at the beginning), but you won’t get lost if you skip a step. He improvises, and from time to time there are “dance parties” where you can do whatever you want until the next structured phrase appears. It’s quite fun, and it’s even better if you can get the people you live with to do it with you.

So join us next time if you can. And if you enjoyed it, Heffington accepts donations to support the teachers at his studio .

What’s next : Let’s try avintage 1988 Jane Fonda . Try this video and we’ll discuss it next Friday.
