How to Help Service Workers Right Now
As more and more communities shut down nonessential services and people increasingly go into quarantine, many workers will be forced to stay at home without pay. If you’re one of the lucky ones who can work from home (or have a paid vacation) and you can still afford this cleaner or dog walker, keep paying them.
Those who are not financially affected by the coronavirus can help keep those who survive. Here are some services you can pause, but keep paying the individual if at all possible:
- Cleaner
- Landscape designer
- Man walking the dog
- Pet sitter
- Babysitter / nanny
- Tutor
- And any other person who regularly comes into your life to provide a service that he temporarily cannot provide due to the coronavirus.
Pay special attention to those who are self-employed or run small local businesses. Will my son go karate in April? Maybe not. Will I pay the monthly fee if he doesn’t? Yes I agree. Because, hopefully, if we do all of this, the owner can still pay his employees and none of the dedicated instructors my son has studied with for the past two years will get hurt.
And if you’re still on vacation, ordering coffee, enjoying a massage, having a haircut, or eating out at a restaurant, tip . Now is the time to get the big and generous tip because chances are they will need some extra cash to help them in the weeks or months ahead.
