How to Watch Picture-in-Picture Videos on Chrome OS

Picture-in-Picture (PIP) video playback is an almost universal feature for many people, unless you have a Chromebook. There, this feature only works for a few apps, unlike web browsers and video streaming apps on Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS.

However, support seems to be growing. The latest Chrome OS update adds automatic PIP support for Netflix streams, which hopefully means more apps will support PIP in the future. But unlike other platforms where switching to PIP is mostly automatic, the method of enabling PIP in the Netflix app for Chrome OS works differently than when watching Youtube videos in Chrome. Here’s how to enable PIP in the two Chrome OS apps that support it.

Netflix

While watching Netflix on the Chrome OS app, simply switch to another app and the video will shrink to a smaller window and continue playing. You can also tap / click the video to return to full screen, play / pause, or drag it to other parts of the screen if it interferes with another application.

Google Chrome

One of the few other PIP-enabled Chrome OS apps is the Chrome browser itself. This feature will allow you to watch almost any video content in a PIP window, which means that virtually every video platform or website that supports Chrome can technically be played in a PIP window while you’re watching through a browser.

You need to download and install this official Chrome extension first . Then, while watching the video, press Alt + P to output the video in a separate smaller video player. The video will continue to play even when you are viewing other tabs and applications, and can be dragged around the screen. Clicking or clicking on the video will also bring up the basic playback functions.
