Make Manhattan Extraordinary With the Help of Benedictines

Sometimes I get so focused on gin and amaro that I forget about the perfect bottles of whiskey, which I just sat and waited to be drunk. This is actually a bit weird because I used to be deeply into Manhattan and Manhattan options.

This is a very varied cocktail. You can change the whiskey (from rye to bourbon or another dark alcohol ) or you can change the vermouth ingredient. Today we do one last thing: make Monte Carlo, replacing sweet vermouth with benedictine, a fancy herbal liqueur made by monks. It’s even sweeter than sweet vermouth, so half an ounce is enough. To make it you will need:

  • 2 1/2 ounce rye
  • 1/2 ounce benedictine
  • 2 drops of Angostura bitter

Pour everything into a glass with ice and stir until completely cooled. You need to stir a lot here, since there is a lot of ethanol, and dilution is very necessary. Strain into a chilled compartment glass and garnish with a strip of lemon zest, if you have one.
