How to Prevent a Bowl of Soup From Slipping on Your Plate

It is best to have a lot of soups with a ladle of some sort. Chicken noodles love salty, while creamy tomato requires a grilled cheese sandwich. The soup goes to the plate and the plate goes to the plate next to its accompaniment. This is a simple configuration, but the smooth surface of the plate is not particularly grippy, which can cause the soup to spill or (even worse) slide the entire bowl off the plate during transport.

My stepmother (an elegant woman) has an elegant solution to this inconvenience: place a folded, damp paper towel between a bowl and a plate. Like a damp towel under a cutting board , a folded piece of paper stabilizes the bowl, preventing it from slipping and sliding over the plate.

When I say wet, that’s what I mean. It is not recommended to use a damp paper towel as this can result in soggy crackers. Just splash a paper towel under the faucet for a moment, squeeze out excess water, and fold it into a square. Place a square on a plate, a bowl on a square and enjoy your meal without the fear of choking the soup bowl.
