Get Android Updates Faster With Google Pixel Repair Tool

There are many ways to update your Android phone . Most people are probably waiting for the latest fixes and letting their phones run the update automatically. This is the most convenient option, but also the slowest, as it depends on your carrier to release the update to you. There are ways to get updates faster – like downloading new updates yourself – but they can be intimidating and confusing for people who don’t want to mess with additional software or system-level operations.

Pixel owners have a bonus option for getting updates early, and it doesn’t require much extra work. All you have to do is use the Google Pixel Update and Repair service to find and install new updates. While it’s harder than waiting for an update to appear on your phone and pressing a few buttons to install it, updating with the Pixel Update and Repair web tool is a great way to get the latest Android patches and updates for your Pixel device if everyone but you.

How to update Pixel devices with Google Pixel Update and Repair

This process should be easy enough for casual users as Google Repair Tools will guide you through every step of the process, but you need a few things before you start:

  • PC.
  • Your Pixel device.
  • USB cable to connect your phone to a PC. (Keep them disconnected until you are prompted to reconnect it using the Pixel Repair tool.)
  • A web browser that supports WebUSB (Chrome should help, but the new Chromium Edge works as well).

Once you have all the components you need, you can get down to business right away. Here’s how to use the Pixel Repair tool to update your Pixel phone (via 9to5Google ):

  1. On your PC, go to the Google Pixel update and restore page .
  2. Select your carrier from the drop-down list. If you don’t see your carrier in the list, click Additional carriers, or if you bought an unlocked device, select Additional carriers> Other.
  3. After choosing your carrier, click Next to start the restore and update process.
  4. First, the tool will help you back up your data, although you can also refer to our Android data backup guide if you need help.
  5. On-screen instructions will then guide you through the remaining steps, which basically include a few small settings changes to put your phone into Recovery Mode; connecting the phone to a PC via USB; then pushing additional buttons and waiting for updates to arrive.

IMPORTANT NOTE. If there are no updates available for your phone, you will be prompted to restore the device to factory settings. DO NOT DO THIS . This will erase all data from your phone that cannot be recovered if you haven’t made a backup.

Close the Repair Tool page when you get to this step and nothing happens. However, your phone will remain in recovery mode. If so (as it did with me and my Pixel 3a), you can cancel recovery mode by doing one of the following:

  • Wait for the phone to automatically exit recovery mode.
  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds until it reboots, then press and hold it for another 10 seconds to cancel recovery mode.
