Save Space on Your Android Device by Automatically Removing Attached Signals
Signal has just updated its Android app with new features that make managing file attachments and deleting old conversations much easier than before.
As Android Police explains , prior to this update, the same encryption-based features that keep Signal signaling secure also made it difficult to accurately determine how much storage space Signal was taking up on your Android device.
You can read more about the technical limitations behind Signal’s storage inconsistencies on the company’s official blog , but the good news is that Android users can now see exactly how many files Signal stores and how much space they take up. This is all thanks to the new application storage menu, which also includes options for quickly deleting old files and messages (and additional options for automatically controlling this process).
Here’s how to find the new storage menu and file management options in Signal:
- Open the Signal app and tap the more icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap “Storage”.
- This screen shows how much alarm message attachments are taking up on your phone. Click Browse Storage to go to a list of all saved files, sorted by type. These lists also allow you to quickly delete any saved files that you no longer need.
The ability to view and delete individual files is a great addition, but the storage menu also allows you to set limits on the number of messages that can be stored in your inbox at one time. By default, only the most recent 500 messages are stored on your device, but there is also the option to trim messages immediately. Deleting a message will delete all attached files, making it easy to automate the contents of your repository.
