Update the Twitter App on Your Android Phone Now

If you are using Twitter for Android, make sure you have the latest version of the app installed.

Twitter announced yesterday that it had discovered a vulnerability in Twitter for Android that could potentially “allow an attacker to see your private account information or control your account (for example, send tweets or direct messages).”

Twitter says that in order to do this, someone would have to insert malicious code into restricted storage areas in the Twitter app. He doesn’t have any proof that anyone actually did this, but it’s still a good idea to update your app just in case.

Twitter also notifies people directly that it believes it could potentially be exposed to this vulnerability. Twitter for iOS was not affected by the issue.

It also only affected the older version of the Twitter app. Twitter notes that the issue was actually fixed on Twitter for Android version 7.93.4 released on November 4, 2019 for KitKat, and version 8.18 released on October 21, 2019 for Lollipop.

All of this suggests that if you have automatic updates set up, or you’ve recently manually updated your Twitter app, then you’re probably already safe. However, it’s worth double-checking to be sure.
