It’s Time to Secure Your Zynga Account

I like to start my day with an email from Firefox Monitor that one of my username and password combinations has leaked onto the Internet again. Today it’s Zynga ‘s turn for me and I’m starting to regret all the Words With Friends rounds I’ve played.

According to Have I Been Pwned, data breaches have affected a whopping 172.8 million accounts (at the time of this writing), which puts it in the 10th most serious site breach – not a rating that no one would want. have. …

If this sounds like old news, Zynga may have already contacted you to let you know that your credentials have appeared in a giant leak. Technically, the company admitted to the data breach in September , but here’s why I’m writing about it now: I never remember getting any email or notification from Zynga, but still my account credentials are according to Have I Been Pwned. at minimum – displayed in the database of usernames, passwords, login IDs, phone numbers, and Zynga usernames.

It doesn’t matter if you miss Zynga’s message or never receive it; you can easily check if your credentials can be found when hacked. To do this, simply open Have I Been Pwned and enter the email address you use for your Zynga account. It is so simple.

While you’re there, I recommend subscribing to the Notify Me section of Have I Been Pwned, which is a great secondary way to tell yourself if, when, your email address is associated with any big data leak. … (I’m using Firefox Monitor , which is basically the same thing.)

If you’ve been an unlucky Zynga player hit by a big leak – and to be honest, even if you weren’t – I recommend changing your password to something that’s strong and unique. Don’t re-use the same password on different websites, a great password manager can help you with this .

Otherwise, Zynga doesn’t offer anything like two-factor authentication to keep your account even more secure. The best you can do is to remain vigilant against phishing attempts on your account, which should reduce (or eliminate) any additional security concerns.
