Turn YouTube Into a Distraction-Free Audio Player With This Extension

YouTube can be a great place to find music to listen to. Since this is a video site; however, this music often comes with a video that can be distracting when you’re really just looking for a melody. Music Mode is a Chrome extension that might help.

Once enabled, the extension redirects you to a page that only plays the audio from the video, not the accompanying video. The page is also stripped down from the original page, with no ads, video suggestions, or comments. Basically, it gives the impression that the video was just an audio file to start with.

Once you have installed the extension, it is redirected directly from Google search. For example, when I clicked the Avett Brothers song in some google search results, I ended up here instead of the standard video page.

In cases where you really want to watch the accompanying video, you can turn off the extension and watch as you normally would.

Unfortunately, it won’t automatically play the next song, so once that tune ends you’ll have to manually select a different one to continue listening. This might be great if you just want to listen to Truth Hurts for a few minutes without falling down the rabbit hole, but not so great if you’re looking for a soundtrack for your workday.

It’s one of those things that you definitely don’t want to use all the time, but in cases where you need a really stripped-down version of YouTube to just listen to a song or two, it can be great.
