How to Prevent Hyatt Bonuses From Expiring

As many World of Hyatt members already know, any accumulated Hyatt Points will expire after 24 months of inactivity. However, this does not mean that you have to book your stay at the Hyatt every two years to avoid losing your points. There are several ways to preserve your World of Hyatt rewards beyond the 24-month mark, including redeeming your points, purchasing new points, and transferring points to another World of Hyatt member.

You can also go to the Hyatt for a small purchase. For example, a cup of coffee.

The Points Guy recently shared the story of a reader who learned that just one coffee was enough to keep the World of Hyatt awards active :

I called World of Hyatt and the customer service agent gave me great advice. She advised me to go to any Hyatt hotel, buy a cup of coffee and present my World of Hyatt membership number. I came here one morning and got a decent cup of coffee and a two year grace period for a couple of dollars. My points were in my account even before I had time to finish my coffee.

The official World of Hyatt FAQ notes that you can keep your World of Hyatt account active by earning additional Hyatt Points “on eligible stays / expenses in a participating Hyatt destination or M life Rewards” and many people may not realize that the “spend” portion of the “stay / spend” may include something small, such as a drink in a cafe.

The Points Guy notes that “you should confirm in advance that your purchase is eligible as independent establishments may not offer rewards even if they are hotel-owned.” You can also just make a small purchase and see if you get new World of Hyatt points on your account, if you don’t want to worry about asking someone to confirm eligibility.

So, if your World of Hyatt Bonus Points are about to expire, it’s time to indulge in a cup of coffee and ask yourself if you really want to become a World of Hyatt member. (If you haven’t used or earned Hyatt Points in the past two years, what are you waiting for?)

Then, when your coffee runs out, see if there is a way to start redeeming some of these accumulated rewards.
