Make Homemade Bubble Wrap Classics

The classics are ideal for kids. This keeps them discreet and secure enough to let off some steam. Plus it’s fun. But what to do when it’s cold or rainy outside and kids need to jump? You bring it home with bubble wrap.

I first got this idea from the Craftaphile blog , the author of which made a set for his niece’s birthday. It’s certainly cute as a homemade gift, but it’s also an activity that you can do for your kids quite easily. All you need is bubble wrap, scissors, and a sharpy.

I ended up with a very long piece of bubble wrap (online winnings) that I cut into 10 equal pieces and spread out to see if they would fit in my narrow dining room. Don’t worry about the size and shape of each block; children don’t care if it’s perfect.

Then I followed Craftaphile’s advice and wrote the numbers on the flat back of the bubble wrap. You want the bubbles to face up, which means you have to write the numbers in reverse order on the back . Like this:

To be honest, it was the hardest part. My brain didn’t like to figure out how to write numbers backwards in blocks, so I pulled out a picture of the reciprocal numbers on my phone and used it as a guide. There is a good example here .

Then you just let the numbers dry and arrange them on the floor however you want. You don’t even need to glue them; they hold surprisingly well in place and are easy to adjust if they move after a few uses.

Then you let them jump:

My only concern was that the bubbles would burst after a few rounds, making this project officially worthless, but that was not the case. We jumped and jumped a few times (that’s right, me too), and then we walked around, popping the remaining bubbles, damn it. My son loved it so much that he thanked me for doing it when we finished.

This would be a great activity to have during a kid’s indoor play date or birthday party to get a surprise twist on a classic game.
