Organize Your Browser Tabs With OneTab, but Also Back Them Up
I love OneTab and you should too. It’s an incredibly easy way to combine the nightmare of tabs you’ve saved in your browser window into a single, crawlable web page. I use this extension all the time and it helped me turn my tab overflow problem into a more manageable mess.
Here’s one secret I learned while I was a OneTab fan: it’s not enough to turn many tabs into one navigable page. You need to make sure that you back up this page (or its content) because one crash, crash or other browser crash and you will lose everything you saved. This has happened to me before – rarely, I must admit – and that’s why I’m a little bit of a backup obsession now.
For backing up sites saved in OneTab, you have several options. The first and easiest way is to simply share your list of saved sites as a web page, then save that web page anywhere on your computer. As an added bonus, it makes all links easy to click and they don’t disappear from the list when you click on them (as you’ve probably noticed if you’ve ever clicked a link directly on the OneTab page).
You can also use OneTab’s Export / Import URLs feature to upload a text file with all the URLs you saved. You won’t be able to click on them very easily, but you can import them into any instance of OneTab you want – whether it’s on your computer because something went wrong and you’ve lost all your urls, or a completely different computer. …
If you haven’t tried any of the options and end up losing all of your saved websites as a result of a crash or other issue, you can still restore the missing list of sites by digging into your Chrome databases . There is no guarantee that it will work, and you may have to grab or run a file recovery tool like Recuva as soon as it does, but in the event of a disaster it is worth investigating.
My advice? Use OneTab to clear your loaded browser, but don’t neglect your bookmarks. Your browser might crash, but your bookmarks will (hopefully) survive any problems. They will always be there for you, whenever you need them. They’re easy to organize – even automatically if you’re feeling lazy – and are a much better long-term archiving solution than even the mighty OneTab, useful as this extension is.
