Whether they are walking down the hallways of high school for the first time or decorating their first dorm room, returning to school can be stressful for teens taking on increasingly complex classroom assignments and new responsibilities. Even they should understand that they might benefit from the advice of those of us who have been there, have done so, and have spent too much on textbooks.

A lot of advice is based on common sense (or should be): go to class. To study. Use a planner. Get to know your teachers. To study. Get some sleep. Drink water. And learn. During your studies, study in a comfortable, but not so comfortable place where you want to fall asleep (for example, on the couch instead of a bed). Make sure it’s well lit and place your phone somewhere further away. Also, I like to keep a glass of tea with me so that after I have finished an important question, I can take a sip.
Get sucked in
Time and again, commentators urged teens to go out and make new friends by joining a club or team or even taking lessons outside of their main specialty to meet new classmates.

I did the bare minimum in college. Instead of going to events and looking for people I can befriend, I decided to stay in my room and watch porn or participate in dramas on message boards. Save teacher names, email addresses and job titles in one document. I graduated and am now applying for a job and I want to use some of them as references, but sometimes they can be surprisingly hard to find. Especially in the digital age, when we are less likely to download the curriculum to your computer. And you never know when they might quit their job at school, or when the school might change the systems they used to retrieve classroom information, making all that information even less readily available.
Don’t get bored in group chats
