Tell the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau That Debt Collectors Do Not Need to Write to You

In May, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed new rules for debt collectors . This update of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which has not been updated since it was drafted in 1977, will limit the frequency of calls to the debt collector each week and provide more clarity for itemized bills. But it will also allow debt collectors to send you text messages and emails.

The CFPB is extending the public comment period after seven consumer protection groups sent a letter requesting an extension. so if you haven’t already told the CFPB that you would prefer the debt collectors not interfere with your DMs, you will have more time. The new deadline is September 18, 2019.
