Make a Homework Mat for Your Child

One thing I don’t like about homework for young children is that after they’ve spent a whole day sitting at their desks at school, we send them to another desk at home. It slows down. Their bodies are wobbly, restless and begging to move.

This is why when my child returns to school, I will make a “homework mat”. This idea is shared by Otis Kriegel , founder of the primary education resource The K5 . You just grab a yoga mat or other portable floor covering (I’d go withblue or green to improve focus) and drop it to the ground when it’s time to work. There they can stretch and move, honing their subtraction skills. “I guarantee it will increase motivation,” says Chrigel. (He notes that children should also have a separate desk or desk, but they don’t have to stay there.)

The great thing about the homework rug is that kids can move it from place to place – say, if their little brother just got a new recorder and is rehearsing Billy Boy in the living room, or if they just need a change of scenery. In fact, children retain more information when they change school.

Use the homework mat in tandem with other attention span tips for kids . I could get my own rug and work with my child. I like the idea of editing stories in a cat pose better.
