Get Away From the Bison

At least two young people have been injured by bison in national parks over the past week. It’s mating season now, so bulls are more aggressive now, but there is one thing you need to know if you see a herd of buffalo: stay away .

The rule that is everywhere in Yellowstone is a good one: stay 25 yards away from any wildlife, and increase this to 100 yards for wolves and bears. Bison have injured more people in this park than any other animal.

This is because they don’t look like they are going to charge you. I’ve been to Yellowstone and sometimes the buffalo just stood by. They are right by the road. They’re on the road, so you might have to stop and then why not take a picture while you’re there? They look friendly. They move very slowly. (The Yellowstone website notes that they can run three times as fast as a human when they want to.)

If you go to a bison park, other people will get too close and you will start thinking, “Oh, that’s okay.” But in fact, these are wild animals that have injured more than one visitor like you. As friendly as they look, keep your distance.
