Relax on the Weekend With a Cherry Cocktail

Alcohol is not known for its ability to sleep. In fact, nothing guarantees a terrible, hectic night like a parade of strong cocktails. But a little alcohol – a scooper – can calm the mind and relax muscles. Combine this with melatonin-rich cherry juice (and perhaps a glass or two of water) for a nice little shake to help you relax.

In my opinion, the nightcaps should be very easy to slip together. You should be able to fit it into a glass (or teacup, for a true nighttime vibe) and not worry about being too large. Half a mixture of tart and sweet juice and bonded bourbon creates a surprisingly perfect balance of flavors – neither too tart nor too sweet – and a hint of orange peel adds only a hint of bulk. In terms of effectiveness: I don’t have any peer-reviewed data to share, but I had one this morning and I’m pretty sleepy now. To make it yourself, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounce bottled bourbon (or whatever bourbon you like)
  • 1 1/2 oz tart cherry juice
  • 1 strip of orange zest

Add juice and bourbon to a cup (or other small drinking container). Add a large ice cube. Let everything cool and thin, then squeeze a strip of orange zest over a cup to pour out the oils. Enjoy.
