How to Solve Any Math Problem Using the App

iOS / Android / Desktop: The default calculator apps suck. They work like a traditional portable calculator that only displays one value at a time and can only perform basic math operations. If you want to do more than calculate tips, you better check out these free and cheap calculator apps.

Fundamentals of Mathematics

These apps can help you do typical “real math” or basic math problems from a textbook.

MyScript Calculator 2 ($ 3 on iOS / Android ): Write equations with your finger on your phone or tablet and MyScript will recognize and solve them. The app supports extended arithmetic, absolute and factorials, trigonometry, logarithms and constants such as pi.

Soulver ($ 9 on macOS , $ 3 on iOS ): Type and edit math or word problems you need to solve. Supports arithmetic, algebraic variables and currency conversion. Great for adding up expenses or income.

Calc + (Free for Android ): Enter and edit arithmetic calculations for the solution. Save calculations or export to note-taking apps.

Advanced mathematics

PhotoMath (free and no ads on iOS / Android ): Enter or take a photo of a math problem (handwritten or handwritten) to solve and see a step-by-step guide to solving. Supports arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, calculus and charting. Great for helping your child with math homework, checking answers, and solving difficult problems.

AutoMath (free for Android ): Similar to PhotoMath, but contains ads and does not support handwritten equations. Enter or take a picture of the math problem you want to solve and review the steps to solve it. Supports arithmetic, algebra, inequality, basic trigonometry, and graphing.

Wolfram Alpha ($ 3 on iOS / Android / Windows Phone , free online ): Enter the math or word problem you want to solve and get step-by-step solutions. Supports arithmetic, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, graphing, differential equations, alternative foundations (such as binary), factorization, functions, logic, set theory, statistics, probability, definitions and history of mathematical terms and real variables.

Wolfram Alpha is similar to Google’s botany, so it’s great for solving tough real-world math problems, as well as doing tough math homework. With a $ 7 / month subscription, support for “image as input” is added.

Fake calculators

These apps are for cool teens who want to hide something from their parents because their family has trust issues.

Secret Calculator (Free for iOS ): Secret browser and file storage hidden behind a working calculator. Password required to unlock. Beware of less popular apps with very similar names. And don’t worry about buying a “professional” version that hasn’t been updated in years.

Storage Calculator Hide Pictures (Free on Android ): Similar to Secret Calculator: Secret browser and cloud-backed file storage hidden behind a calculator app. Supports multiple passwords for specific albums and can send alerts when a user enters an incorrect app password.
