Mosquito Repellent Apps Not Working

For decades we have been able to buy devices that reproduce sounds that are supposed to repel mosquitoes, and for as many decades they have been completely useless . Now, instead of buying a device, you can download the app. Guess what? It still won’t work.

“It’s all wishful thinking. There is no evidence that sound-emitting devices can stop mosquito bites, ”mosquito scientist Cameron Webb writes for The Conversation .

And yet, there are dozens of lists of mosquito repellent apps on the iTunes and Google Play app stores. Some claim they work, while others contain disclaimers such as “Important! It has not been scientifically proven that low-frequency sounds can help ward off mosquitoes. For this reason, this app should be considered a joke app. ” Another kindly notes, “You can also [use] this app as a joke to annoy your friends with this sound :)”

If you really want to keep mosquitoes away, turn on the fan. The breeze prevents mosquitoes from smelling your breath. For extra protection, apply an insect spray containing an effective ingredient such as DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil . They – unlike sound repellents – do work.
