Block Sites From Google Results With UBlacklist

Chrome: Sometimes you just don’t want to see a certain site in Google search results. Maybe you want to block a sketchy news source, or you don’t want Pinterest in image search results, or there is a really rude forum that keeps popping up in search results. Some sites, such as Yahoo Answers and Quora, can clutter up a lot of searches. You can block a site from future searches using the uBlacklist Chrome extension .

After installing the extension, uBlacklist adds a “block this site” link to every Google result. To remove a site from search results, click the link and click OK.

The extension is reliable and multifunctional. When it blocks certain results, it includes a small notification at the top of the page, next to the Google results tally. Click Show to temporarily show blocked results. This will also show a link to unblock the site. Instead, image results are displayed as blank fields and can be opened with a single click.

In the uBlacklist extension options, you can sync your blacklist across devices using Google Drive and manually enter URLs to block. By using wildcards, you can block the entire site or only specific subdomains or pages. The extension links to syntax guides for these blocking rules.

Unfortunately, there are several holes in the net. For example, if you block foxnews.com, uBlacklist will block Fox News as a source when looking for news from the Google homepage, but not when searching on news.google.com . And blocking a site also does not block that site’s social media pages for results (unless you also add them to your blacklist). But these are minor flaws that shouldn’t get in the way of most uses of the extension.

Previously, Google had its own extension for blocking sites, but it was closed shortly before 2018. This means that you have to trust the developer iorate, who responsibly handles access to your Google history or checks the source code of the extension on GitHub .
