Google Maps Will Now Alert You to Natural Disasters in Your Area

Google Maps can already guide you around traffic jams and blocked roads, but now they can also help you avoid areas affected by natural disasters.

Today’s update includes:

  • A hurricane forecast that appears if you are near an area that could be hit by a hurricane.
  • Earthquake tremor map if an earthquake has recently occurred in your area
  • Flood forecasts for India, where Google cites 20% of flood-related deaths worldwide.

On the card that displays this information, you can also send your location to friends and family or share information about the crisis so you can let others know which areas they should also avoid.

Later this summer, Google Maps will add similar functionality to navigation, allowing you to avoid roads and areas along your route that could be affected by a natural disaster.
