View Definitions and Pronunciations of Words While Reading Websites With This Extension

Even the most avid readers among us sometimes come across words whose meanings we do not quite understand. My typical move in this case is to copy / paste the word to google in another tab and see what appears. This week I came across a Chrome extension that removes the middle person (or middle tab in this case) and instead handles the operation on the same page.

Called ” Google Dictionary “, once installed, you just need to double-click any word on the website to open its definition. The definition will appear in a floating square above the existing text. You can also reproduce it if you are wondering how it is said.

In addition to being able to learn the definition locally, the extension also allows you to keep a history of the words you searched for, allowing you to refer to them later so you can potentially learn them forever. You can also allow other third-party extensions to access the story so that they can do something like create flashcards so you can brush up on them.

It also works with words in foreign languages and will automatically provide definitions in the language of your choice. This story can be downloaded at any time in CSV format.

Supported languages include Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, and Turkish.

In general, this is a fairly simple extension, but it can be useful.
